CropLife UK, the trade association for the crop protection sector, welcomes the publication of the revised National Action Plan (NAP) for the Sustainable Use of  Plant Protection Products.

In a statement, Dave Bench, CEO of CropLife UK, said,

“This NAP sets out UK governments’ revised aspirations, building on the existing NAP. CropLife UK will work with all administrations to ensure that their implementation of the NAP contributes to a productive, profitable, and sustainable agricultural sector.

We look forward to engaging with the UK government and devolved administrations on the detail of the policies in the NAP to ensure that implementation helps farmers deliver sustainable production of safe, healthy, and affordable food.”

CropLife UK, working alongside others in the sector, supports the sharing of best practice. We are glad to see government recognition of the need to support growers adapt to changing conditions, and to strengthen the knowledge base around pest management.

We welcome the continued focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM can help growers to make the best decisions for their farms, within a framework of integrated farm management. Our sector has long championed the use of IPM to help decision making and future plans should recognise the extensive current  practice of IPM to identify existing strengths and areas for innovation.

Plant protection products are subject to an extremely stringent regulatory regime before they can be used. It is essential that system is delivered efficiently and effectively to enable governments’ aspirations to be met.

We will continue to provide our advice and support on the development, implementation and evaluation of policy in this area to ensure these fit within a broader coherent approach for UK agriculture that supports farm productivity, food security and sustainability.

Note to Editors

This NAP buildings on the existing NAP, published in 2013 and written to implement the requirements of the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012. This was confirmed as the extent NAP, without change, in 2018. A further review was due by 2023.
